Papa Prognosis

My Dad
1937
Just wanted to take a minute to say thanx for all the prayers and good wishes you have sent--it is just lovely. My Dad will be going home tomorrow barring any unforeseen happenings. He wasn't doing so well yesterday but has picked up dramatically today and is unhooked from all of the IV's so we are hopeful.
He will really have to watch his diet now--pretty much very low SODIUM--yuck. I cook a lot of freezer meals for them so if you have any good recipes with low sodium--please share! Mine are a little on the high side--now that I have been looking. It will probably be a blessing to me and my family to lower ours right along with them.
Other than that he just needs to take it easy its just not going to get any better. I think that is what he struggles with most. He has run marathons, hiked mountains, skied most every resort available, passionate gardener--just very healthy. In spite of this he has had to have 2 open heart surgeries and a pace maker put in.But he has still remained pretty active with his grand kids. It is hard for him and hard for me to have to watch. My Mom--never mind--another day--anyways--that's the scoop--thanx again! I am busy counting my blessings!
PS--I tried SOOO hard to make paragraphs etc--it was a no go---mmmmmm--cranky.....

It was nice to read about your dad...prayers and hugs to you and your family. It is SO hard to see a parent sick.

That's hard. My mom really had to change her way of cooking and eating out habits when my dad was diagnosed with diabetes. It's been hard, but she's got it down now. And they even lost a little weight. I will be on the look out for lower sodium recipes for you. Maybe there's a website that has some too?

It is so hard to keep a good man down. As in less busy in their busy lifetime. You are a blessing to your father. I respect you greatly for how you are helping him. Good luck and prayers to you.

Thanks for the update. In spite of everything happening, you seem to be chipper. What a good daughter you are to make them freezer meals. Glad to hear your dad is coming home tomorrow.

I'm so glad he's able to come home. It has to be hard for him since it sounds like he's been so active and healthy. Hopefully he can maintain the diet and get back to normal.

So very glad for the good report but will continue to keep him in my thoughts and prayers.

He's very lucky to have a caring, attentive daughter such as you!

I'm so glad he is improving but I can feel his frustration with his health status through your words. It must be so hard for a man like him to endure this particular trial. He's having to show a different kind of stregth this time I guess.

so glad to hear he gets to come home. Good luck on the meals. I'm afraid we use way too much salt in everything we cook.

So glad to hear your dad's not quite so under the weather. It was hard with Grandpa, years ago, to hear that this is as good as it gets. Now with some minor things for me, like eyes, ears, knees...I hear 'this is as good as it gets' and I know first hand the frustration. I thought the heavenly body would be my reward for trying hard to follow the right path..didn't realize it may be a necessity for wearing the old one out!!

Such a scary time! I'm so sorry he's going through this. It must be a very helpless feeling. He sounds very active and I'm sure it's hard to see someone go through such things. Take care! I worry about ever losing one of my parents, but as I get up there in years and as my parents get to the ages where their parents passed away, it is always a reality. But your dad is going to make it through and be great! Good luck with everying. You all are in my thoughts and prayers! God bless.

I am allergic to shell fish and have to avoid iodine. As a result I rarely use salt and if I do it is sea salt. I use lots of garlic, onions, herbs (fresh when I have them) and peppers. If you use a variety of seasoning you really won't miss the salt. Several friends have commented that they didn't notice the lack of salt in my cooking.

I agree with the post just before mine. I have to be very careful about sodium, and I just use a lot of fresh herbs, Lawry's seasoned pepper, and the I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray (which has no sodium and almost zip calories). Garlic makes a huge difference, too...as do fresh vegetables.

The thing is, once you haven't used sodium for a while, you lose the taste for it. You begin not to like it because it burns your tongue. I don't even miss it now. And they do make more and more salt-free foods all the time...like low sodium soups and no salt tortilla chips.

Good luck to you...and your dad!

I think we were supposed to find each other. My dad is sick also. He has a disease called Spinal Cerabeller (I know I spelled that wrong( anyway Ataxia. It's hard to watch such strong active people go down. I have watched my dad take 2 hrs. planting a 4 by 4 foot area with peas. He did it on his hand and knees. Even at that his arms would give out and boom face plant in the dirt. He can't even do that any more. I need to blog about it but I can't. I get too emotional. Good luck to you with your dad. go to Tara's Kidz blog and read today's post. It is wonderful.

So glad to hear he is out of the hospital. I know it is hard to slow down. I am glad he is so active. Hopefully he can get back to all that. m

Lisa, I have not blogged or blog-surfed for a while so I didn't know about your Dad. I hope everything is okay. It's really hard to now be in the position of parenting our parents. I have a 76 year old Mom who is not healthy and not always in the best of spirit, so I'm there with you. Keep us posted. Maybe we can help each other.

paragraphs schmaragraphs-- who needs them? my mind is a rambling mess, so I like it better if you just talk and say what's on yours. I am so glad your dad is improving!
